The Sorg Lab is a team of exceptional researchers who are dedicated to honing their craft and expanding their knowledge. From undergraduates to research scientists, each member possesses an unyielding passion for scientific discovery and a relentless work ethic that drives them to excel. To thrive in this dynamic environment, one must have "good hands," resilience, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Morgan Smith

Morgan is a Ph.D. Student in the Sorg lab. Morgan earned a bachelor’s of science degree with a concentration in microbiology from James Madison University. She currently is working on determining other targets of YabG, a sporulation specific protease, involved in processing C. difficile germination specific proteins using proteomics. In her spare time, she enjoys drawing, reading, and playing video games.

  • Merilyn Beebe

Merilyn is a Ph.D. Student in the Sorg lab. Before joining the Sorg Lab, Merilyn completed her undergraduate degrees in Biochemistry and Genetics at Texas A&M University. Currently, she studies how different strains of C. difficile from different clades differ in their physiology. Outside of work, Merilyn enjoys reading, baking, and hot air ballooning.

  • Adegoke Adegbite

Adegoke “Goke” Ph.D. Student in the Sorg lab. Goke has a medical degree from Nigeria; after a few years of clinical practice, he proceeded to obtain a master’s degree in Biomedical Science in Virginia. Because of his keen interest in research, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in micribology where his project focuses on how C. difficile cells interact with bile acids. He intends to combine bed-side and bench-side skills to provide solutions to major medical problems. Goke unwinds playing chess and taking natural scenery photographs.

  • Josh Brehm

Josh is a Ph.D. Student in the Sorg lab. Josh is investigating the role of small acid-soluble spore proteins (SASPs) in C. difficile outgrowth. He also helps develop genetic tools for use in C. difficile. Josh graduated from Texas A&M in 2017 with a B.S. in Biology and 2021 with an M.S. in Microbiology and is now continuing work on his PhD.

  • Theresa Ariri

    Theresa Ariri

Theresa is a Ph.D. student in the Sorg lab. Prior to joining the lab, Theresa earned her bachelor of science degree in microbiology from the University of Lagos, (Lagos State, Nigeria) where she studied hydrocarbon degrading bacteria in polluted soil. Her project in the Sorg lab is to understand how the small acid soluble proteins are degraded during outgrowth.

  • Michael Kyere

    Michael Kyere

Michael Kyere is a Ph.D. Student in the Sorg lab. Michael earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Subsequently, he received his Masters of Science in Biology from Georgia State University. Michael’s project focuses on developing novel biologicals that can be used to treat C. difficile infection.

  • Gitartha Sarma

Gitartha is a Ph.D. Student in the Sorg lab. Prior to joining the lab, Gitartha earned his Bachelor Science in microbiology from Shillong College (Shillong, Meghalaya, India) and his Master of Science in Microbiology from Dayananda Sagar University (Bangalore, Karnataka, India). Gitartha is investigating the mechanisms by which C. difficile spores germinate and outgrow into a vegetative cell.
